How to Write Shopify Product Descriptions That Actually Sell (COD Edition)

April 5, 20258 min readMuhammad Abdullah

The product description is your silent salesperson. Here's how to write one that converts skeptical COD customers into confident buyers — even for first-time shoppers.

Why Your Product Description Is Costing You Sales

Most Shopify merchants spend hours finding the right product, running ads to drive traffic, and optimizing their store design — and then write a two-line product description copied from the supplier's catalogue. That's the equivalent of hiring a great chef to cook an amazing meal and then serving it on a dirty plate.

Your product description is doing one of two things: building enough confidence and desire in the customer's mind that they place an order, or leaving enough doubt that they close the tab. In COD markets especially, where customers are already slightly cautious about online shopping, a weak product description is a decisive reason to not buy.

The good news: fixing your product descriptions is one of the highest-ROI improvements you can make to your store, and it costs nothing except time. A well-written description can improve conversion rate by 15-30% on the same traffic.

The Psychology of a COD Customer Reading Your Description

To write a great product description, you need to understand what's going through a COD customer's mind as they read it. They're asking five questions, even if they're not consciously aware of it: Is this product real and does it actually work? Will it look/feel/fit like it does in the photo? Will it arrive within a reasonable time? What happens if it's not what I expected? Is this store trustworthy enough to give my address to?

Your product description needs to answer all five of these questions, in that order. The customer who gets to the end of your description and still has an unanswered concern will not buy. The customer whose every concern has been addressed confidently will order.

COD customers have an additional comfort layer — they know they don't have to pay until delivery — but they're still hesitant because wasting time on a return is itself a cost. Address the product quality, the delivery experience, and the return process explicitly.

The AIDA Framework for Product Descriptions That Convert

The most reliable framework for a converting product description is AIDA: Attention, Interest, Desire, Action. Start with Attention — a bold opening line that speaks directly to the customer's desire or pain point. Not 'High-Quality Wooden Serving Board.' Instead: 'The kitchen piece your Instagram followers will ask about every time you host.'

Move to Interest by establishing credibility and specificity. Real dimensions. Real materials. Real use cases. Vague descriptions create doubt. Specific descriptions create confidence. 'Made from natural acacia wood, 45cm x 30cm, food-safe and dishwasher-safe' is infinitely more convincing than 'premium quality wood serving board.'

Build Desire by painting a picture of the customer's life with the product. 'Imagine serving charcuterie at your next gathering — the warm tones of the acacia wood, the compliments from your guests.' This shifts the customer from evaluating the product to imagining themselves owning it, which is the mental state that produces purchases.

Close with Action — a clear, confident call to order that removes hesitation. 'Order now with cash on delivery — no card required. Delivered to your door in 2-3 days. Free return if you're not satisfied.' Short. Confident. Clear.

What to Include (And What to Cut)

Include: specific dimensions and weight, materials and quality indicators, what's in the box (packaging contents), delivery timeline for your key cities, clear return policy, and at least one sentence about who this product is perfect for. These elements reduce purchase anxiety and build confidence.

Cut: vague quality claims ('premium,' 'best quality,' 'amazing product'), supplier catalogue language that sounds robotic, excessive use of exclamation marks, and anything that reads like it was written for another market. Pakistani, Egyptian, and Saudi customers read descriptions that feel written for them — in a conversational, direct tone — very differently from translated catalogue copy.

The best product descriptions for COD markets are conversational, specific, confident, and short. Three to five sentences in the main description, with bullet points for specs below. Customers on mobile don't read paragraphs — they scan. Make your most important points scannable.

Using Customer Language in Your Descriptions

The most powerful thing you can do for your product descriptions is read your actual customer reviews and WhatsApp messages, then use their exact words. When a customer says 'It's exactly like the picture, I was scared it wouldn't be but it's perfect' — that's a marketing goldmine. Restructure that exact sentiment into your description: 'What you see is what you get — our product photos are taken by our own team with no filters or editing.'

Customer language is more persuasive than any professional copywriter's language because it's authentic and it mirrors what other potential customers are thinking. When you write a description that sounds exactly like what your customers already believe, it creates an instant feeling of 'this brand gets me' — which is one of the fastest ways to build the trust that converts a browser into a buyer.

Collect this language actively. After every successful delivery, ask for feedback via WhatsApp. What did they love? What were they worried about before ordering? What would they tell a friend about the product? These answers are your description content — and they're the most honest marketing research you will ever do.

Key Takeaway

A great product description is your best salesperson — one who works 24/7, never calls in sick, and converts customers at 2 AM when your team is asleep. Invest the time to write it properly, test different versions to see what resonates, and update it as you learn more from customer feedback. In a market where trust is hard-won, a description that answers every question and removes every doubt is a genuine competitive advantage.
